Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay 2023
Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay 2023
Virginia@Vasse Felix: Fruit selected only from the most striking vineyard plots. Gin Gin Clone. 9 Months on French Oak.
Tasting Notes
Showing classic aromas of fine stone flint, lamb fat, and champignon, alongside custard lemon biscuits. Subtle hints of wet limestone and ocean spray. Sweet new straw bring savoury notes.
Beautifully structured with long taut acid lines that provide strength and power. The palate evolves with lingering flavours of grapefruit, clotted cream and hints of ginger and lime leaf.
Plaudits
When it comes to the best of the best, provenance is paramount. And taste memory utmost, especially when tasting Heytesbury made under Virginia Willcock’s tutelage (in ’26 she clocks up 20 years as chief winemaker at Vasse Felix, during which time she has transformed chardonnay in the region and beyond).
Her influence is here in this wine, and ’23 will be known as one of the finest. Oscillating between power and refinement, intensity and pure drinking pleasure. Nothing else to say other than that this is outstanding. 99 points. James Halliday.
- The 2023 Heytesbury Chardonnay has just been voted the White Wine of the Year in 2026 James Halliday Wine Companion.

Sitting on the balcony at Vasse Felix, overlooking the swaying Marri, Karri’s and manicured lawn, while chatting with friends and drinking a Heytesbury Chardonnay, is one of the things everyone must experience once in life. 2023 was an exceptional year for Chardonnay in Margaret River.

About Winery
About Winery
Vasse Felix is one of the big Margaret River three (Leeuwin and Voyager the others). It is officially known as the first commercial winery in Margaret River so the winery will always be an integral fabric of the region. They have a broad price range here – from the classic red at $15, to the Tom Cullity at around $200. The restaurant, in culinary experience and setting, is exquisite, and lauded winemaker Virginia Willcock has just been voted winemaker of the year – 2026 Halliday. (Head viticulturalist Bart Malony was voted best viticulturalist by James Halliday in 2024 so must know what he’s doing too.)
James Halliday:
Vasse Felix is Margaret River’s founding wine estate, established by regional pioneer Dr Tom Cullity. Chief winemaker Virginia Willcock has energised the winemaking and viticultural team with her no-nonsense approach and fierce commitment to quality.
