Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay 2023
Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay 2023
Tim@Leeuwin Estate: Bright, fragrant and energetic, the nose of the wine shows lime sherbert, pear and burnt lemon, and just a touch of white nectarine. Faintly floral, wattle, jasmine and frangipani emerge, with brioche, cardomom and chamomile in tow.
Tasting Notes
On the palate, finger lime, white peach and nashi pear are all on display, the wine’s generosity offset by freshness and tension; the palate weight and texture is gently framed by quality French oak. All this leads on to a finish ultimately defined by balance and refreshment - an excellent, classic expression of Margaret River Chardonnay.
Plaudits
It’s the best Prelude I can remember tasting, I’ll say that much straight off. A little struck match, very spicy (some pepper and cinnamon), bright citrus and green pear, hazelnut, fine flinty grip, with a cool finish of excellent length. Fine-boned but delivers just enough flavour. I was so taken by its balance and charm. Superb drinking. The Wine Front. 95 points.
There would be a lot of wineries who would love to have this as their top chardonnay. But of course, Leeuwin has that little matter of Art Series above it. It Seems to have struck a nice balance between the early more The vintage has helped but the fruit is so pretty with typical cashew, light grapefruit and a little lemon character supported by such exquisitely applied oak. Very good. Ray Jordan 94 points.

If the Art Series is the sexy girl at the party, commanding all attention, then the Prelude is understated in the corner, with just as much substance, and almost as much style. This is still an extremely good Margaret River Chardonnay and extremely good value at $44.

About Winery
About Winery
Leeuwin Estate is an icon of the Margaret River region. Founder Dennis Horgan is a visionary at heart – and a risk taker. The goal was the best art, wine, food and music all in one venue. It sounds like marketing 101 but in 70’s wine was just beginning to be produced in Margaret River and the town itself was thought of as a kind of country outpost 3 hours south of the most isolated city in the world. The idea that you’d fly an orchestra halfway across the world to perform at a winery in Margaret River (which Dennis did) and that people would rock up to watch them, was insanity.
Over the following years, through skill and perseverance, the vision became a reality. Art from some of Australia’s finest, adjourn the walls below the restaurant, the wine and food is sublime, and the concerts on the sprawling Leeuwin lawn, are never to be forgotten. In my opinion it’s the best venue for a live concert in the world.
Sitting on the veranda at Leeuwin Estate for lunch, the Karri trees swaying, the kookaburras singing, the air crisp and wondrous, is just one of those things you’ve got to experience once in your life.
James Halliday.
This outstanding winery and vineyard is owned by the Horgan family, founded by Denis and Tricia, who continue their involvement, with son Justin Horgan and daughter Simone Furlong joint chief executives. The Art Series Chardonnay is, in my (James') opinion, Australia’s finest example based on the wines of the last 30 vintages.
