Forest Hill Block 9 Shiraz 2023
Forest Hill Block 9 Shiraz 2023
Liam@Forest Hill: It was the driest summer since 1994 in the region however the dry grown Forest Hill blocks flourished. This ideal dry ripening period with low disease pressure, cool nights and moderate warm days provided excellent fruit quality across all varieties.
Tasting Notes
Dark red with purple hues. A bouquet of black pepper and cinnamon followed by blackberry and dark chocolate. Vibrant red & blue fruits on the palate with characters of nutmeg and cloves. Silky tannins and long finish.
Plaudits
Multiple picks from the single site lend complexity to the wine. Medium weight and silky textured. Lithe and fresh feeling with a light dusting of grippy tannin that falls in a web over the wine. A sense of elegance, and a distinct 'syrah-like' sensibility to this wine. It's not trying too hard, but effortlessly makes the (high) grade. 96 Points James Halliday.

The cool climate Shiraz from the Great Southern is starting to forge a reputation Australia-wide in the last few years. Block 9 is the flagship from Forest Hill. It would be interesting to see how it stacks up against a high quality Shiraz from the Barossa. I reckon pretty well.

About Winery
About Winery
Founded in 1965, which makes it the oldest in the Great Southern Region, this small, family-owned winery is ahead of its time in producing quality Pinot and Riesling. They make very small amounts of highly lauded wine here. (You won’t find many, or any, in bottle shops).
James Halliday.
This family-owned business is one of the oldest ‘new’ winemaking operations in WA and was the site of the first grape plantings in Great Southern in '65. The Forest Hill brand became well known, aided by the fact that a ’75 Riesling made by Sandalford from Forest Hill grapes won 9 trophies. The quality of the wines made from the oldest vines (dry-grown) on the property is awesome.
